After the worldwide success of Beluga, his well praised coffee table book with still lives of nude models and seafood, the Belgian master of the lens focuses this time on wildlife and big game. As he steps into this colourful imaginary world he takes along with him not only his trademark choice of beautiful women, but this time also a wide range of stuffed animals. "My fascination for taxidermy dates back to my youth", he explains. "After our little nautical adventure in Beluga, I was ready for a new surrealist book project. Only this time I chose to work with stuffed animals, so as soon as I'd made up my mind about that, I started to collect all sorts of mounted animals again, just like I had done ages ago. Stuffed animals totally fit the surrealist frame I am always looking for in projects like these. Also, they are way easier to work with than living animals." Another important feature of Diana is the artwork. Art director Vital Schippers creates a beautiful synergy between lay-out and pictures, e.g. by impregnating the picture pages with certain graphic artwork elements. As was the case in Beluga, master chef Wouter Keersmaekers of the Belgian Michelin star rated restaurant De Schone Van Boskoop, takes care of the rather unusual recipes that unite each picture and animal. The chef explains his enduring commitment: "Van Cleemput's unique way of blending art and humour has always intrigued me and keeps on doing so to this day. He succeeds in creating top quality photographic art with a gentle comic touch and that's exactly what I strive to do in my kitchen. I start from the metier and try to take it to an artistic level." As for the perhaps rather awkward choice of animals such as the badger or hedgehog, the famous chef found himself triggered into researching the vast world of culinary eccentrics for inspiration." Hence I discovered that deer tail soup is considered an aphrodisiac in China, but also found some old gipsy recipes involving hedgehogs and badgers. I guess you could say that working on this book has broadened my culinary vision quite a lot, although I consider Diana more a photo book than a cookery book. My recipes are merely the garnish, whereas Jean Van Cleemput serves the main course."
